The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

No one told Mollie about the dangers of working with phosphorous before she started her job at the United States Radium Corporation just after World War I. Her tedious and seemingly harmless painting job killed her. Radium Girls points out the many ways companies, medical doctors, and the law failed to acknowledge and remedy the problems, sometimes deadly ones, associated with industry in the early twentieth century.

Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America by Jill Leovy

In this book, Leovy brings out the failure of the legal institutions in Los Angeles County in recognizing and reducing the extent of violence and black homicide in an area of the city that seems segregated from the rest.  The author demonstrates the magnitude of the problem by illustrating the culture of black violence in South Central LA through the traumatic experiences of two police officers.
